Felicia Lindau, the founder and CEO of Sparks.com, had a huge job ahead of her building her Internet startup business from the ground up and it had to happen fast. The goal was to create an internet greeting cared store which would carry nearly every major and every specialty greeting card so people who didn’t have time to wander up and down the aisles of a local store with limited selection would have a better way of shopping in which they could find the perfect card, every time.She had a human resources, marketing, business development, accounting, data entry, imaging, order fulfillment and programming teams coming in over the few weeks. Everyone would need a computer connected to a network of servers and shared resources. She also needed enough web servers to host the site and manage a high level of traffic at any given time. The 15,000 square foot warehouse had never even had its own phone line before, much less internet access.
We found the best rate for high speed internet access that would support the heavy demand and worked with the Internet service provider to set up the T1 line. Then we purchased the wiring and components so we could get started on putting up the infrastructure to support the 100 client desktops. We worked with Felicia to design out wiring with the proposed floor plan and she was thrilled with the results. The exposed blue and yellow cable streams for voice and data worked great. Although we could have hidden them if she’d preferred, they looked so cool in their office environment which had a strong element of warehouse chic and that mattered a lot to them.
We worked extensively with the programmers and the IT director to be sure to order the right desktop computers and the right servers configured with redundant components to avoid any single point of failure. By creating relationships with the hardware and software venders, we were able to get Felicia significant discounts and a higher level of service from the vendors to make it easier to manage any problems that might occur.
We set up the systems for the users before they arrived so they could get to work right away. We assembled the servers with the high performance components and configured them for their various purposes and thoroughly tested them. We also created a development domain for the programming team for testing code before it would be promoted to the live website.
