Alex called us up one day asking if we could be there the next day to take a look at his home office computer. He explained that it was acting funny, slow at times and crashing at times. He thought it might have something to do with a virus warning he got from his anti-virus program. It found the virus, but didn’t fix it. He wasn’t sure what to do, so he called us.
We found that Alex’s anti-virus software was a couple of years old and it didn’t have the ability to block new types of viruses, nor had it been updated in quite some time. We upgraded the virus software and configured it to keep itself updated automatically. When we ran a full scan with the updated software, it cleaned the file it could not fix before and found additional viruses he didn’t know he had.
Alex was happy to know that his data would be ok. He said he had been accumulating contacts, email and documents over the last few years, but confessed that he had never done a backup. There are a number of essential things required to protect a computer system, even a single home office computer. We discussed the things to be aware of and how to prevent such problems and how to be prepared for them if they did.
I also explained to Alex that his broadband connection to the Internet also left his computer wide open to anyone with malicious intentions. Alex was fascinated to learn that, even though his system might have nothing of interest to a hacker, his system would still be a valuable resource to attack other larger systems. Usually the attacks are on commercial websites like eBay and Amazon.com, or on government information and infrastructure websites.
With an abundance of options for inexpensive hardware and software firewalls to choose from, we decided to go with a software firewall which would make his computer invisible on the Internet with the proper configuration. Alex was glad that he had exercised due diligence to prevent any problems.
Once we had his system completed, Alex still had a whole list of questions about things, ranging from problems formatting Word documents, to other questions about how to get his own domain email address so his business would look more professional. I could tell Alex said he enjoyed how I was able to able to explain everything to him in terms he immediately understood and that he never imagined he could have learned so much in just a few hours.
