Kelley Lennon and her husband Brian manage a virtual team of designers, programmers and a host of other professionals from their home office. They each have a laptop which allows them to be totally mobile for meeting at their client’s offices. While they are experts in the realm of design and technical support, they didn’t have the expertise to solve the technical issues they were having. They knew they needed some kind of backup since they had already had a few problems.
With the new house they were settling in to and a new baby on the way, cost was a primary concern. After discussing their comfort level with technology, we were able to set up a very inexpensive solution for backups and disaster recovery. Rather that spend a lot of money on a server or an external backup device, we took advantage of the internal CD/RW (CD burner) drive that each of their laptops already had in them. Now they had a one-step backup they could use at any time and a disaster recovery backup to carry with them on business trips. The cost was about $.80 per re-writable, re-usable CD.
Staying in-step with technology is essential to not only staying safe and secure, but maintaining reliability. We installed the current Microsoft service packs and critical updates for Windows and Office to get the systems up-to-date and to resolve the problems they were having with the computers crashing at times.
They already had anti-virus protection and a home firewall, but they were not being maintained. So we updated the firewall firmware and anti-virus software and it up to continue updating automatically, which is necessary in a networked world and it keeps costs down by reducing administration.
They had some problems networking their computers together, so we configured them as A workgroup so they could share data and resources, such as the printer. Now they could both print to the same printer and were able to easily drop files into shared folders so they could collaborate on projects more efficiently.
We documented the detailed step-by-step instructions on how to run their backups, restore data and all of the pertinent info for keeping their systems up to date themselves. Now they could work more effectively and had peace of mind knowing they had taken the step necessary to keep them secure and running smoothly. We wrapped up on time and under budget, much to the dismay of Morphus, Kelley and Brian’s sweet tempered gigantic dog who had gotten very comfortable sleeping on my foot while I worked.
