Phil Helms is in charge of the information technology for his law firm. He said they had been looking for someone who could provide them with occasional support. They had a legal secretary who was charged with the added responsibility of serving as their in-house support, but often the problems they were having required more expertise, time and patience than they were able to manage themselves. We resolved issues for Phil and impressed him over the months by solving problems quickly and he liked how well we worked with the attorneys and legal secretaries so well. We worked out a regular maintenance schedule to help prevent some of the problems from occurring and we took the burden off the legal secretary. At Phil’s request, we wrote up a proposal for upgrading the network, addressing several key areas that were causing many of their problems. He wanted to have a good understanding of the big picture so he knew what they needed down the road and what to expect from their currents systems in the meantime. Since they didn’t have the budget allocated for a significant upgrade, we continued to maintain the systems and troubleshoot issues that popped up from time to time and kept everything running smoothly. As expected, a few months later the problems did begin and we found ourselves spending an increasing amount of time troubleshooting problems that we could prevent. Later that week Phil asked me to lay out the most critical upgrades in a sensible progression and we tackled upgrading his network in phases, eliminating chronic problems with each step. We were able to migrate all of the desktop computers to Windows 2000, which provided far more stability than Windows 98. After learning all there was to know about their networked applications on the old server, it was a snap to reinstall them on the new Windows 2000 server, which solved many of the stability issues and saved countless hours of restarting crashed computers and applications and re-entering lost data. With the new server, we also set up centralized anti-virus software that automatically kept all networked client computers updated and reported any incidents directly to us via email as they occurred, which eliminated the frequent virus problems they used to have. To make the three big HP printers more reliable, we networked them and made it easy for anyone in the office to decide which printer to use and to find alternates if one had a problem. Through helpful tips and training they were able to get more effective use from the applications they used, such as WordPerfect, Westmate, Timeslips, Legal Solutions and the hardware for scanning, CD burning and video presentations using a laptop geared for taking to trial. We also set up secure remote access to the office network so they could easily access documents while on business trips or during a trial. Over the years, we met the bottom line, kept the network working and helped them take advantage of their technology, and enjoy using it now that it worked so much better. All the while, we maintained documentation that gave them the power to decide with whom, how and when they would choose to spend money on their systems. We are proud to be the company they continued to choose.
